The spreading radiance of the Institute

It is now nearly sixty years since the creation of the Pikler Institute and thirty-five years since the publication of the first book about it: "Lóczy, an Unusual Approach to Mothering" - M. David and G. Appell. This was followed by many other writings concerning the remarkable results of this approach. Today, the international recognition of the Pikler Institute is impressive. Information about its discoveries in the field of child care radiates around the world.

      - Fifteen countries, including France, United States, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland, have broad-scale relations with the Institute. The Institute team offers training of professionals and supervision and advisory services for various types of organizations in Hungary and in other countries.
      - In the majority of these countries, various receiving facilities for young children study the work of the Pikler Institute while taking its experience as a starting point.
      - Many Universities present the work of the Pikler team in their courses, and some conduct scientific or clinical research on the subject of the Pikler approach.
      - Six international congresses have been organized around the research of the Pikler Institute;
      - Hundreds of visitors have come from about fifteen countries to visit the Institute in the last five years.
      - There are many publications - in eight languages about the work of the Institute.
      - Humanitarian organizations, like "Médecins sans Frontières" (Doctors without Borders), have requested the Institute to take various actions.

In 2000, Bernard Martino, [a French producer known for the quality of his documentaries that question the humanity of our society - and in particular for his series: "Le bébé est une personne" in 1985 (The Baby Is a Person) and "Le bébé est un combat" in 1995 (The Baby is a Struggle)] made a film at Lóczy, (the Pikler Institute.) It is entitled, "Lóczy, a Place to Grow". In May 2001, this film was presented in a short version (1hr. 50min.) on French and German television, on Arte. The complete version (2hrs. 50min.) has been shown, and continues to be shown in many countries. This version is available in German, English, Spanish, French and Hungarian.

In the recently published book, "Lóczy, a New Paradigm? The Pikler Institute in a Multifaceted Mirror" (P.U.F., 2002), one can read on the jacket:

"the Pikler Institute... is that place which has successfully brought off a real tour de force. For more than fifty years, children who have been deprived of their family at a very early age have been raised here without damage to their developing personality. Why devote a book to it? "Because, after this strange 20th century which taught us all the scientific ways to destroy the individual personality, rare are the places where, as here, one knows scientifically how to help it construct itself." (B. Martino).

On March 20, 21 and 22, 2003, took place in Budapest an International Symposium entitled TO GROW, WITHOUT VIOLENCE.
